Whether you’re heading out on a romantic date for which you want to look va va voom, or you’re having a girl’s night out and want to impress, experimenting and playing around with different hairstyles is all part of the fun. At the same time you don’t want to put yourself out, spending ages on your hair and end up panicking over a style gone wrong. Here are 20 easily-achieved, big statement looks that suit every face!
#1 Romantic Waves
Going for a celestial, classic beauty look? Stop right here. Hollywood waves are soft and feminine, perfect for mid to long locks, as Sofía Vergara shows us. Either tong hair before gently brushing through or wrap sections of hair into loose mini buns overnight to reveal soft curls the next morning!
#2 Wispy Low Bun
A low bun is often neglected when it comes to dinner dates and nights out, but it can actually look soft and far from ‘office wear only’. Fix the hair in a low bun at the nape of the neck then pull face framing pieces out, making it less formal and more feminine.
#3 Wet Look Parting
This is definitely a look for the braver among us, but it’s surprisingly easy to do without just looking like a greaseball or like you got caught in the rain. Using a gel like ORIBE Hard Rock Gel (€40) or Garnier Wet Effect Gel (€3.50), comb the product through the roots to tip and comb into position. Leave to set.
#4 Half Updo with Va Va Voom Volume
À la Brigitte Bardot, this look makes it seem as though you’ve double the amount of hair and only takes a minute or under! Gather the hair from the top of the ears across and backcomb at the roots before tying it in place at the back. A little bow will give it that retro, girly feel.
#5 Adorned Top Knot
This is soft and ethereal, making it suitable for anything from a wedding to date night! Simply gather the hair at the crown, keeping the parting visible, and tie into place as a pony. Then fold the pony over itself and either pin it in place or tie it if your hair is thicker. Once secured, pull gently at the bun to give it more volume, gently pulling out wisps to give it that softer appearance.
#6 Teased Bun
If you really want serious volume, this red carpet-like style will be your go-to look! Backcomb the entire front section and sweep back to the height where the tops of your ears reach. Secure into a bun, gently combing the front piece to stay as loose and high as possible while remaining in the bun. Use hairspray and clips to ensure they don’t budge.
#7 Braids and Bun Combo
I always thinks this looks like something from Lord of the Rings, but in a good way! It also looks like you put far more thought and preparation into it than you actually did. Grab a section of hair from each side and plait them to the tips. Then gather the two plaits to the back and pin. Fold the rest of the hair up into a loose chignon and clip in place, using hairspray to prevent frizz.
#8 Opposite Parting for Volume
This is a beachy look that will vamp up your ordinary au natural look. Dry shampoo the roots if you want even more volume. Then just flip your hair into a more extreme side parting, the opposite to how you usually wear your hair.
#9 Retro Hairband
Want to look like a 1960s babe like Lily Collins? Backcomb the hair at the crown and have a smooth side parting tucked behind the ears. Keep it all in place and add retro glam with a thick hairband worn just where the hair begins to get more voluminous.
#10 Slick Straight Low Ponytail
This one is a bit of a no-brainer, as a high pony enhances everyone’s facial features and can give us sharper cheekbones in particular. If you want to make it a bit more dressy, hide the bobbin by twisting a portion of your hair in the pony around the base of it and secure it underneath.
#11 The Clip Back
This one is for those days when you basically just want to wear your hair down and go without a fuss, but still want a touch of glamour and fun. Get a few detailed clips to place on the side of the hair, above the ear. Parfois have a really affordable selection that look grown up and elegant.
#12 Milkmaid Braids
Again, this looks like a style far more advanced than the usual braid, but in reality it’s as easy to achieve. Separate the hair into two and plait as normal. Then cross the braids over the front of the head, just behind the fringe pieces, so they cross over each other. If it’s good enough for JLaw, it’s good enough for us!
#13 Short ‘Do Slicked Back Do
Short hair doesn’t have to be worn in the same one way as people often assume! As actress and activist Hayden Panettiere illustrates, it can be changed from day to night to give a dramatically different look. Slick back with gel or backcomb and set with texturizing spray such as Fudge Professional Think Big Texture Spray (€12.40) for a vamped up ‘do.
#14 Minnie Mouse Ears
This is such a quirky & playful look that doesn’t have to be designated to the under 12s age group, given its hippy, Almost Famous look. It’s virtually as easy as putting your hair into a bun, keeping the parting in the middle and dividing it into two!
#15 Faux Bob Tuck
Fancy going for the chop but want to see if it suits you first? Try this on a night out and you should know! Watch this tutorial by Elanna Pecherle and see how easy it is to turn those long locks into a bob in just a few minutes.
#16 Mermaid Braid
Okay, this is for when you want to spend a little more time to get used to doing the fishtail braid, if you haven’t before. It’s well worth it though, as once you get used to doing it, it can be done in about five minutes. Watch a few Confessions of a Hairstylist tutorials and you’ll be sorted!
#17 Fringe Plait
If you want to keep your hair out of your face but still have it down and flowy, braid the front sections of the hair to keep it from falling into your face. Braid the sections on both sides of the parting and pin back. Simple!
#18 Disco Curls
If your hair is naturally curly, this will be far easier to achieve! Simply encourage the curls to be bigger and fluffier (but not frizzy) with a mixture of curl creams and a diffuser. The KeraCare Natural Textures Defining Custard (€11.45) really does enhance curls without making them crunchy or sticky.
#19 Bobble Effect Pony
There’s something a bit sci-fi about this one, but we like it! Blake Lively is a hair goddess, so if she adorned it even this once, we’ve gotta try it out! Separate the hair into layers from the top of the ear across, working downwards into ‘steps on a ladder’ layers. Tie each into a pony, connecting them by adding the tail of the pony above into each layer’s pony underneath it.
#20 Undone Chignon
Margot Robbie can most likely pull off any look and still look perfect, but this undone chignon captured our attention very quickly. Leave the fringe out to leave it soft and undone, gathering the rest at the nape of the neck and pulling into a low pony. Pull the ends through as if you are about to fold it into a bun, but stop just before the ends are folded into it and leave it to drape naturally!
