Our skin affects our confidence enormously. How we perceive ourselves and how others view us is determined by how we feel when we see our reflection to a degree, even if we know our physicality is far less important than our personality and actions. If a hot date is on the books, we’ve got 13 ways to regain that confidence while you hide any skin issues!
#1 Lemon Juice to the Rescue
Lemon juice acts as an astringent due to its citric acid, it will help balance the skin’s pH levels and reduce any redness on your face. Squeeze fresh lemon juice onto a cotton pad and apply it to the affected area. Leave it on for about five minutes and then rinse with warm water. Pat dry and then continue with your moisturizer regime.
#2 Let Skincare Absorb
Clearly the best form of attack against acne, and the knock it has on our confidence, is by getting rid of it with good skincare. Form a good day and night skincare regime and it’ll heal over time. Remember, double cleanse at night, tone and moisturize, followed by spot cream on problem areas.
#3 Use Spot Covers
If you’ve only just a spot creeping its way onto your face, seal it with a spot cover like Dream Dots (€14.99) before applying any makeup. High quality covers will practically become invisible under makeup so your hot date won’t even notice.
#4 Apply a Primer for Oily Skin
In order to keep your makeup in place throughout the day, use a primer aimed at oily skin. Once your skin is mattified it will keep the makeup in place longer, which is especially important for those pesky spots. The Make Up For Ever Mattifying Primer (€34.95) renowned for saving oily skinned girls!
#5 Colour Correct with Green Corrector
If the acne is inflamed and sore looking, it can be hard to disguise the redness even if you use foundation and concealer! Oftentimes the concealer won’t stick to the outskirts of the spot if it’s drying and healing, so begin by colour correcting after priming. The green cancels out the redness and means you have a more even base.
#6 Use a High Coverage Foundation
Foundations have come a long, long way in the last few years, with high coverage foundation now readily available in lightweight formulas that look and feel natural on the skin. Vichy Dermablend (€14.95) is an excellent choice given this brand knows skin – and blogger Hanna Talks does a great job of showing us how! Estée Lauder Double Wear (€40) is another cult favourite. Yves Saint Laurent Le Teint Touche Éclat (€34) is another beauty to hide all imperfections, as is Revlon Colorstay (€18.99)!
#7 Follow with Spot Concealing
If there are still persistent little buggers poking through, target them directly with some killer concealer! Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer (€30) is my hero concealer for anything, from eyes to imperfections! Maybelline Fit Me (€8.99) concealer is a great dupe, whereas Collection Lasting Perfection (€5.79) has been popularised following vlogger praise on YouTube!
#8 Pat in the Product, Don’t Spread
If your skin has broken out, spreading the product as much as you usually would won’t cover them sufficiently. Obviously you must blend as much as possible, as much as you ever did, but use a different technique. Pat the makeup around the problem area rather than spreading it.
#9 Conceal and Highlight Under Eyes
There is no point having a perfect base around the jaw, chin, forehead, cheeks and nose only to leave those dark circles around your eyes untouched! Finish it off and give yourself some radiance with a light concealer if you don’t suffer from much eye baggage. The L’Oréal Paris Lumi Magique Concealer (€12.79) is a dupe for the illustrious YSL Touche Éclat. For heavier coverage go for something like the bareMinerals bareSkin Complete Coverage Serum Concealer (€26).
#10 Set the Eyes with Powder
There’s nothing that will turn you into a defeatist quicker than seeing all of your hard work going against you when you look in the mirror to see your under eye concealer has creased and no matter how much effort you’ve made to perfect your skin, it looks a bit wrecked now that it has creased. Set it with light powder to prevent this, such as the RMS Beauty ‘Un’ Powder (€33.95).
#11 Blot Skin Throughout the Day
Don’t panic if at some stage during the day you see a bit too much oil on the t-zone area or problem areas. This is easily fixable without tampering too much with your skin. Bring blotting paper in your makeup bag and when needed, get rid of excess oils this way. Even on a date, just excuse yourself to the powder room and blot, blot, blot!
#12 Bring Concealer and Powder for Touchups
If absolutely necessary, you can do a little touch up here and there with some concealer and set with powder. Bring a multi compact with you and spruce up in a jiffy. Remember to blot first so you aren’t pushing more oils into the skin and causing more breakouts!
Another great and quick way to distract or hide any skin blemishes or spots that may have appeared before your big date night is by applying a strong lip or eye look. A smokey with shimmer will truly mean all eyes on you, drawing your suitor to your eyes too, where he/she should be looking at when talking to you. Red or pink lipstick is also a great way to keep the conversation flowing, and yes that pun was intended.
