Fashion is always pushing boundaries from its extreme styles to resurrecting the many older fashions. One trend we’re all about getting on board with is the underwear as outerwear look, that fashion icon/designer/singer/actress Rihanna knows all too well. Though she herself isn’t a fan of wearing bras, when she’s out & about she sure does love to wear her lingerie, négligée and robes. Here are the 21 fashion tricks to this trend without looking like you’ve just walked off the Victoria’s Secret catwalk.
#1 The Lace Bralette
There’s no doubt that every girl owns at least one lace bralette, and so she should, because they’re divine! These are easily one of the biggest pieces to nail the underwear as outerwear trend. To make the bralette more of a casual look, wear over a plain t-shirt and jeans, and team with bold accents the way Kendall Jenner has here.
#2 Go Wild
Bras and bralettes come in all styles, colours and prints so why not go wild and opt for a leopard print like Rihanna! It’s a great way to dress up any casual look, though the pointed bra may not be everyone’s cup of tea… (and yes, pun intended!).
#3 Vintage Corsets
Okay so corsets definitely aren’t the most casual of attires, and not everyone will want to wear them out. Usually reserved for a sexy night in, break the rules and take your look to special events or occasions instead. If you’re a bold fashionista, then step up your game by teaming a corset with matching wide trousers for a demure look, or keep it go casual chic with cut off denim shorts and a longline cardigan.
#4 The Cut Out
Cut out underwear and bras are also a big trend, as generally the cut out look is everywhere in the fashion world. Similar to the lace bralette, the cut out bra is easy to wear. From wearing under a leather biker jacket to soft cover ups and high-waisted shorts.
Co-ordinates are very much on fleek, and with this underwear as outerwear trend it’s actually quite easy to wear a lingerie set for a party. Opt for high-waisted bottoms with your chosen set à la Perrie Edwards of Little Mix, add a long mesh dress atop and you’re ready to go!
#6 Pyjama Party
Wearing this trend doesn’t only mean lingerie, but as of late it’s come to include pyjamas too! That said it’s all about the silk printed look that Queen RiRi nails to a tee. You can opt for a full top & bottoms two-piece ensemble or go for the open robe and lace bra too! Boudoir slippers are optional, but they sure make these pyjamas sassy.
#7 Silk Gowns Part I
As aforementioned, silk gowns are where it’s at. What was once reserved only for the bedroom and lounging around the house has now become one of the chicest ways of dressing on the streets. Although Taylor Swift was performing at Victoria’s Secret, her silk robe sparked fashionistas to push their limits.
#8 Sporty Spice
Sports bras might be a new thing to just wear out for your street style, but they’re made easy with the likes of Moschino and Calvin Klein jumping on the bandwagon. Dress yours up with a contrasting blazer, ripped jeans and heels, or keep it casual with flat sneakers.
#9 Layer Up
Sometimes bras are meant to be seen, right? Have some fun with your fashion by layering bras, longline bralettes, bustiers or a corset over t-shirts, shirts and even dresses. Not only will you surely make your mark, but you’ll stay that bit warmer too.
#10 Silk Gowns Part II
We all want to have the option of looking more casual in underwear and the likes, and Attico designer Gilda Ambrosio shows how to style the silk gown down. Her bright mint robe coat is worn with jeans and a plain top, flats and a black waist bag to accent the look together. Very simple!
#11 I See You!
Mesh, sheer and fishnet tops are very popular for wearing over an exposed bra. This is also one of the easiest (and probably laziest) ways to get ready for a night out!
#12 The Slip Dress Part I
Another piece that’s stepped out of the boudoir bedroom and onto red carpets is the the slip dress. Classically a scooped neckline and short length, it now features different cuts and lengths and has become a sleek option for many celebrities. Team with simple accessories for a fuss-free finish.
#13 Bandeau to the Rescue
A bandeau can help bustier women wear shirts with ease, style with matching trousers or shorts, tie a sports luxe look together, or simply be that ‘I-don’t-give-a-damn’ finish as you last-minute reach for a lace bandeau before heading out. Both CiCi and RiRi nail it.
#14 The Lace Trim
Lace trims along a slip dress, along bustiers and generally along bras are extremely popular and a great way to add a subtle sexiness to your look. It’s also the ultimate way of saying “Yes, I am wearing my underwear as outerwear!”
#15 The Slip Dress Part II
The slip dress trend doesn’t have to be plain, as many of the high street stores show with their floral prints and chic styling. Denim jackets and buckled ankle boots are such a plus!
#16 Peekaboo Tricks
Blazers + bras = instant fashionista. You’ll see this look pop up plenty of times, and though many celebs dare to go bare by wearing a blazer sans bra, keep your cool with the peekaboo effect. Sometimes showing just a little lingerie is more sexy than wearing nothing at all.
#17 Overcoat Robes
Though similar to the silk robe, this is a specific product designed to look more like a bathrobe and be more of a coat, hence its name.
#18 Classy, Classy
There are numerous ways of wearing underwear outdoors and making it look demure and classy. Layering lace on top of another is one way of doing this, or wearing a longline bralette with a high-waisted matching skirt or trousers is another. Model Taylor Hill and singer/actress Miley Cyrus show us how to do these very easily.
#19 Business Boss
If you are a #GirlBoss in any way and want to wear your bandeau out instead of the generic shirt and skirt look, then team a satin style with a longline or boyfriend blazer and high-waisted pants like RiRi does.
#20 Get On That Bodysuit
Bodysuits have become very mainstream in the past few years, and for good reason. They’re so easy to wear, more comfortable than t-shirts and can make your outfit more dressy within seconds. Beyoncé is one of the best examples for wearing these on stage, strutting her stuff like the performance queen she is.
#21 The Kimono Effect
A cousin-style of the silk robe, the kimono has made its way into the fashion scene in a big way too. A very classy trend, wear with flowy trousers and ensure yours has floral or Oriental motifs and wrap-around strings and that its sleeves are wide.
