Our skin is very important to us all, it’s what you face the world with every day so taking good care of it is key. But what happens if you have oily skin and just want to hide under the covers all day? We’ve got 20 brilliant beauty hacks to get rid of those worries and let you shine – without the oiliness!
#1 Don’t Dry Out Skin with Harsh Products
This is one of the most common mistakes people with oily skin make, thinking that by using harsh, drying products their skin will no longer be oily. In fact, the skin is stripped so much by excess washing and harsh products that it compensates by producing even more oil! Stick to twice daily washing and gentle products, with exfoliating and acids kept to a minimum.
#2 Facial Cleansing Device
Clarisonic, Vanity Planet and Foreo are just a few of the excellent cleansing devices available now, which will clear up skin quickly by deeply cleaning and gently exfoliating it. The good versions are so gentle they won’t strip the skin or aggravate it, but keep it soft and cleanse out those oil-blocked pores!
#3 Use a Gentle Toner
Many of us with oily skin are drawn towards toners that are drying, but in the same way we shouldn’t overwash your face or use harsh chemicals too much, we shouldn’t look towards harsh toners to balance our skin, which is its purpose after all. Look for alcohol-free, calming toners.
#4 Red Clay Mask
Red clay masks in particular are good for drawing out impurities and soaking up oils, according to dermatologist Shani Darden. L’Oréal Paris Pure Clay Glow Mask (€11.49) is a nifty choice, or try the acclaimed First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Purifying Mask with Red Clay (€30.72)!
#5 Vitamin C
Including this ingredient in your skin routine will give you brighter, even-toned, wrinkle-free skin. In conjunction with other ingredients it can be less reactive, or have a mad reaction, so make sure you’re not using it right before or after a retinoid or Niacinamide!
#6 Try Retinol or Retinoids
Retinol-based products are basically one of the best ways to ensure your skin stays young looking, and can even banish any wrinkles that have already started to form. Use sparingly, a few times a week is enough.
#7 Use BHAs Regularly
Doutzen Kroes has enviously glowing and clear skin without that undesirable slick of oil. Using BHAs is a great way to gently exfoliate the skin and leave it glowing without being too irritating. Because they’re oil-soluble, means that they’re hard-working and can penetrate the pores!
#8 Don’t Use Heavy Moisturizers
Reminding you of the first tip, don’t reach for a heavy moisturiser to ‘replenish’ the skin after aggravating it, if yours is feeling stretched or too dry. This won’t balance it out. Instead, start gently and end gently with a gel-like moisturiser that will sink in better.
#9 Mineral-Based SPF
Mineral SPF contains either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which are both oil-free and won’t clog pores as they coat the skin rather than penetrate it. They still protect the skin just as well though!
#10 Double Cleanse
At night, if you’ve been wearing makeup all day, you should certainly be doing a double cleanse. First remove all the makeup with either an oil, a cream or a balm. No, using oil isn’t counterproductive as it draws impurities out of the skin! Plus you’re then washing it off, following with a gentle cleanser to penetrate deeper.
#11 Use a Primer
Using a primer before you apply foundation will ensure the makeup doesn’t seep into your skin directly or slip around during the day. Make Up Forever and NYX both do trustworthy versions.
#12 Veer Towards Sheer Formulas Daily
Mineral foundations are the best for our skin overall as they don’t seep into the pores at all. They also treat the skin as they often have an SPF and can come with acne-treating properties such as the bareMinerals Blemish Remedy Foundation (€29.50). It doesn’t contain parabens, dyes or other unnatural additives.
#13 Don’t Over Powder
It can be tempted to try change your skin type by bullying it into submission with mattifying powders, but this will only leave you looking overly matte, cakey and unnatural. Do a light layer of powder and you can top up when you need to.
#14 Use Highlighters Regardless
Just look at Miranda Kerr… If this doesn’t make you go with the glow, then you’re a lost cause. Using a highlighter at the high points of the face will bring life to your face after applying other mattifying products especially. Otherwise you’ll look flat and dull-skinned.
#15 Use a Makeup Setting Spray
Lock in the makeup and make it last longer with a setting spray. Almost every brand has released one now at this stage, so there’s a multitude of options depending on what you like. The NYX Matte Finish (€9.33) is good for keeping the T-zone in place!
#16 Drink More Water
This really applies to all of us regardless of our skin type, but for those of us with unbalanced skin (oily or dry skin) it’s even more important for the sake of improving our skin. Having enough water in our system means our skin is flushed of impurities and isn’t aggravated due to dehydration.
#17 Don’t Overdose on Sun Tanning
The sun does dry out the skin causing it to react by overproducing oil to make up for it. Whereas many of us think the sun balances our skin as it seems to have a short-term effect of drying up the oils, it’s actually sucking up the moisture in our skin and leaving our skin to produce more sebum in defence!
#18 Refresh During the Day
Instead of caking the face or over powdering over makeup during the day, it’s better to spray the face with a mineral water to refresh makeup. It will also calm and cool the skin, giving you that clean feeling without exacerbating the skin.
#19 Don’t Touch Your Skin!
Karlie Kloss, you should know better! But seriously, touching your skin often during the day means you’re far more likely to spread germs and bacteria, causing spots. You’re literally pushing the grime of the day into your face… ew! Oily skinned folk are more susceptible to this as the oil traps skin cells and bacteria – so stop!
#20 Use Hand Gel to Keep From Spreading Bacteria
To elaborate on the previous tip, further prevent spots and aggravated skin by bringing a mini antibacterial hand gel in your handbag! Your hands will stay as clean as possible, so when you inevitably touch your face (minimally please!), it won’t affect you. Clear, glowy skin awaits!
