There are certain habits we all pick up along the way in life, which do us no favours. In fact, they make us less naturally beautiful, and who wants that? Read up on the 20 beauty habits you need to break in order to be the best version of yourself!
#1 Biting Nails
It’s hardly surprising that this is bad for us but yet we do it anyway, just like most of these in this list. Biting your nails weakens them, leaves them looking frayed and unpresentable and causes dental damage also. Germs are transported to your mouth regardless of how impeccable you think your cleaning habits are.
#2 Sleeping With Your Makeup On
We’ve all been there when you are simply too tired to properly clean your face. Even still, you should always have in place a simple skincare routine for each night, one you don’t even have to think about but can do in five minutes or less. Otherwise you will end up spending more time and money trying to erase the damage done-from blocked pores and acne to wrinkles caused from lack of care and clean moisture.
#3 Wearing Tight Ponytails Too Regularly
Wearing your hair scraped tightly back is useful and pretty, yes, but if you do it too tightly too often it may damage your hair and affect your hairline. Strain in the hairs will cause breakage at the roots, especially for the very front of the hair as it is being pulled back the most. Your hairline will recede if you don’t change this bad habit ASAP!
#4 Not Wearing SPF Daily
This should be something you prioritise nowadays, given the coverage it has gotten in the press highlighting how dangerous it is to face the sun with no protection. Sun damage causes massive skin degeneration, leaving you with early onset wrinkles, brown spots and less plump looking skin.
#5 Squinting and Frowning
If you find your concentration face is one that squints, or if you have a natural ‘resting bitch face’, this is a surefire way to give yourself wrinkles before your time. The old wives’ tale “if you make that face it may stick like that forever” is rooted in truth, as the more you frown or scrunch your features, the more the face forms itself into that shape. Do what Tyra taught us, and smize!
#6 Fiddling With Your Hair
Too much twisting of the hair strands will cause breakage, and constant touching will also add dirt and oil to the scalp, causing it to build up a lot quicker and giving us greasier roots than we could expect otherwise. It also transfers dirt and oils from the hair to the face, as we tend to touch the face throughout the day too… Another bad habit we need to break!
#7 Using the Same Pillowcase For Too Long
If you don’t change your sheets and pillowcases on a weekly basis, the dirt, sweat and oils will collect on them as quick as a petri dish, leaving you to dip your face in them every time you use them to soak it all up.
#8 Using Tanning Beds
Like the point on SPF, this should already be a massive no go area for us all now, but sadly it is not. No matter what protection you use, when you use tanning beds you are subjecting yourself to a dangerous amount of UVA and UVB rays which penetrate the skin from an alarmingly close range and cause cancer years down the line, not to mention deep wrinkles, brown spots and overly dry skin.
#9 Excessive Heat Styling and Over Processed Hair
Having your hair curled or straightened with an iron can be fun and give beautiful results, but it shouldn’t be something we have to do daily every time we leave the house. Similarly, bleaching and dyeing the hair can have a massive impact on its condition, so opting for dyes with the least amount of chemicals possible is the way to go.
#10 Using Dull Razor Blades
Shaving is something most women do regularly for at least one zone of the body, be it the underarms, legs or bikini line. Constant use of our razors dulls the blades, but as none of us consider it a particularly exciting step in our regime, we often forget to switch up the blades and end up leaving our skin with rashes and ingrown hairs as a result of a rough shave. Ouch!
#11 Forgetting to Use Body Moisturiser
OK we aren’t all princesses, but this step shouldn’t be reserved for luxury treatment sessions at home. By leaving our skin without moisturiser after we get out of the shower, it is stripped from the heat and water it just endured and can end up drying out quite badly throughout the day.
#12 Picking off Gel Manicures
To me this is something that Austin Power’s Goldmember character would do. Gross! Seriously though, you may think you are saving a few bob by peeling off the gel at home instead of having it taken care of professionally, but it really destroys the nail bed and leaves you more in need of more expensive and long term professional treatments.
#13 Not Cleaning Makeup Brushes Weekly
The natural oils from your face will breed on those handy brushes after touching your face, so make it a weekly habit to take them all out and run them under some warm water with some gentle soap or face wash.
#14 Forgetting Hand Cream
They say the first place you can tell your age is your hands. All that time focused on our face means other parts of us that deserve a little beauty T.L.C. get pushed to the side. The wind, cold and even sun will age those babies quicker than you can click your fingers!
#15 Missing Sleep Nightly
With all of our schedules becoming more and more hectic as society evolves, it has become the norm to get six hours or less of sleep on a nightly basis. Most biologists concur that the optimum amount we should be getting is eight hours or we simply won’t be functioning at full capacity. You may think you are getting by and performing daily duties just fine on far less, but do you really want to be just getting by?
#16 Not Brushing Your Teeth Properly
I don’t doubt that most of us make the effort to brush our teeth both morning and night, so ingrained in our culture of maintenance this basic step is nowadays. The question is are we really doing it properly? Firstly, if we don’t brush our teeth for at least two minutes each time, they aren’t being fully cleaned. The technique we use is equally important, making sure we brush in circular motions, reaching the gums and behind our teeth also, following up with floss.
#17 Working Out With Makeup On
It is bound to happen now and again if you are an avid fitness fan and usually wear makeup on a daily basis. Yet you should always try to go to the gym, or begin your workout, with a fresh, clean face. Otherwise once you begin sweating, the makeup will seep into your pores along with the sweat and clog them.
#18 Trim Your Hair Regularly
A huge amount of us are guilty of leaving split ends while we are trying to grow out our hair. However, averting regular trims actually prolongs the process, as damaged split ends will prevent your hair from growing properly. Professionals recommend getting even a very short amount of hair trimmed every three months.
This is something your mother and granny would pester you about for good reason. Make the effort to sit with your shoulders pushed back and aligned with your ears, and stand with your tailbone pushed back in alignment with your shoulders and ears also. You’ll look thinner and taller than ever before, trust me!
#20 Using Old Makeup
Professionals say throw mascara and eyeliner out the quickest, as they only last approximately three to four months. Foundations last from six months to a year while lipsticks last a year or so. Powders last around two years, while cream sticks (blush and contour) last around a year and a half. If a product changes in formula or smell, it’s time to toss it. They are replaceable after all, but your face is not!
