It can be so easy to get bogged down in what we lack in our wardrobe and focus on wanting more, that we forget what we actually have. Most of us accumulate clothes over the years without realising how much we’re storing at home, and yet still have those “I have nothing to wear!” crisis moments. To help you, here are 18 awesome tips to spring clean your wardrobe and actually see what you do have!
#1 Take Everything Out
Firstly, start by taking every single item out of your wardrobe. As frustrating as that may seem, you won’t get to grips with what you have until it’s all laid out in front of you. Even the shoes and accessories!
#2 Does It Still Fit?
Try items on if you’re unsure of them or you can’t remember the last time you wore them. Even after that, also try on clothes you often mindlessly throw on and reassess them, do they actually fit properly and suit your figure? Just because you like them hypothetically doesn’t mean they suit your particular shape, so double check then keep or bin.
#3 When Was the Last Time You Wore It?
Be honest with yourself when going through each piece and assessing when the last time you wore it was. If it was a year ago or more, it should go in the ‘get rid of’ pile immediately. If it’s been under a year, trial keep it in your wardrobe for a month. If you don’t wear it at least once then it’s gone.
#4 Create Capsule Wardrobe
If you really want to get serious about cleaning out your closet, consider making a capsule closet. This can be done for each season, so you cut out any extra time in the morning selecting an outfit and you know everything works together.
#5 Why Not Sell or Donate to Charity!
Is there anything in your wardrobe that’s in good enough nick to be sold on? There are many apps and websites that have made this super easy to do, just make sure there aren’t any rips or stains. Also obviously don’t include underwear! Otherwise, be more charitable and donate clean, unwanted clothes!
#6 Use Drawer Dividers
If you open your drawers and clothes practically explode out, it’s time to get that in check with drawer dividers! This way everything is exactly in its place and easy to find. Colour co-ordinate if you can too!
#7 Neat Order is Key
If you have any floor space underneath your closet, don’t just waste it! You can keep on top of what you have and the condition they’re in with no hassle. If you don’t have this space already, maybe consider a shoe shelf or two installed so you can see all of those pretty shoes.
#8 Over the Door Dividers
These are usually made with shoes in mind, but you can really use them for anything that will fit in there! Accessories, t-shirts, underwear or socks all fit in here and stay neatly stacked not to mention visible!
#9 Get Slim Hangers
Not only do slim hangers look neater and more streamlined, they also allow for more space in your closet or on your stand-alone rail! If you get them in a monochrome colour they blend in better with your closet and tend to look more elegant.
#10 Do the Separates Match Each Other?
This is particularly resonant if you want to create a capsule wardrobe. Make sure most of your items can be paired with one another. This way you don’t have to trawl through your clothes to put together an outfit!
#11 Make a Playlist!
If you need extra motivation, make a playlist before you even begin any of these steps. This way it transforms from being a boring task or a duty you feel forced to fulfill, to something creative and fun!
#12 Do You Have Timeless Pieces?
If you want your wardrobe to last far past the current season, ask yourself whether the items you want to hold on to are timeless. If they’re fashion staples, they’ll still look great in years to come, but if your wardrobe consists of mainly trend pieces then you’ll find yourself having to clear out your clothes more often.
#13 How Many Trend Pieces Do You Have?
In saying that, it can be fun to be a bit frivolous now and again. If a trend comes along that really calls to you, include it in your wardrobe. If you have a few pieces that you really love now, keep them and enjoy them while they last!
#14 If It’s Broken, Will You Fix It?
If you find something with a bad stain or a big rip, question whether you’ll really get it fixed soon or whether it’ll just stay there for more months. If you’re not willing to fix and wear it in the next few weeks, it’s time to move on.
#15 Comfortable = Confident
This is easily one of the most important tips. If you can’t answer whether an item makes you feel good or not, put it on, do your hair and apply makeup if it helps. If you still don’t feel right and it doesn’t make you any more confident, then bin it!
#16 Be Versatile
Regardless what your profession is, it’s good to have an assembly of work and casual outfits at your disposal. This way you can mix up your look more and you’ll never be stuck at any form of occasion. Also, always have a dress or elegant outfit you feel empowered wearing for parties, fancy dates or weddings.
#17 Keep All the Same Items Together
Whether you’re putting everything back into a drawer or hanging in the closet, try to organise them so all the same type of items are kept together. In other words, all the shirts and blouses together, all the trousers and jeans together, all the jumpers together, etc.
#18 Have Key Seasonal Items
Before wrapping up and patting yourself on the back for doing such a good job, make sure your entire wardrobe covers the seasons. Do you have a heavy coat for winter, bikinis & cover ups for summer, a light jacket for autumn? Make it practical or it’ll never last and soon your wardrobe will once again be in disarray.
