Makeup application is definitely an art, and not one that all of us are adept at! Having poorly done makeup is worse than having none, so instead of wasting your time or going out looking a bit off colour with giant harsh brows and panda eyes, follow our beauty hacks to perfect that face!
#1 Beauty Sponge
What did we do before the beauty sponge came along? Popularised by the famous Beauty Blender (€24), a good sponge will give you perfect coverage while simultaneously making it look as natural as possible. There’s no chance of creating cake face! The best on the market is the Beauty Blender but the H&M Precision Sponge (€2.99) is a cheap alternative.
#2 Go Light Handed
The best way to ensure you don’t end up looking cakey or mask-like is to always use a light hand! This way you can build up coverage as needed without over doing it. Remember it’s easier to add makeup than remove. Approach eye makeup the same way, as you don’t want to look like an 80’s stark icon.
#3 Shadow Quads
Yes, eyeshadow palettes aren’t exactly cheap. Most range from €5-€75, which can be a pop for just one quad, but trust me; you want this. For example, the Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette Colour-Coded Eye Shadows (€50) has an incredibly creamy formula and is rich in colour payoff, and each quad has a purpose unlike many others, which end up half used and half the colours unsuited to you. One is a brow bone and inner corner highlight, one is a crease colour, one a lid colour and one a layering shade.
#4 Tape for Eyeliner
If you’re eager to be one of those girls that can achieve a cat eye with one slick move of the pen but always end up with wonky lines or smudges everywhere instead, you need scotch tape in your life. To ensure the tape won’t irritate your delicate eye skin, place it on your hand and rip it off a few times to make it less sticky. Place it underneath the lashes at the outer corner and angle towards the temple. Draw your line and tear off the tape gently to reveal a perfect flick!
#5 Dealing with Smudged Mascara
Look, it happens to the best of us. You’re applying mascara and get carried away, accidentally brushing it all over your eyelid, undereye or even the side of your nose. Instead of getting frustrated, just carry on and let it dry. Once dry, you can easily brush it off with a cotton bud and moisturiser.
#6 Coloured Brow Gel
If you like the no makeup makeup look on a daily basis, a coloured brow gel will really save your brows from looking lacklustre and patchy. It’s a lifesaver for those days when you need to get ready quickly too. The L’Oréal Paris Brow Artiste Brow Plumper (€8.49) is superb!
#7 Cream Products for Cheeks
Whether your skin is dry, oily, normal or combination, cream and liquid products will look the most natural and lightweight on your face. For blush, bronzer and highlighter particularly, cream products will blend into the face far easier and give you a glow from within (or so it will seem)! The Becca Creme Blush (€28.45) and the Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed (€36.90) are the gods of cream blush and highlighter. The Sleek MakeUP Cream Contour Kit (€13.99) is a fab creamy contouring palette too, that rivals the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit (€45).
#8 Use a Glowy Primer
Using a primer that will give life to your face, it ultimately means using less products on top of it. The Stila Stay All Day 10-in-1 Illuminating Balm (€30.95) is a multitasking wonder, keeping oil at bay while moisturizing, increasing collagen and antioxidant production. The This Works In Transit Primer (€29.80) acts as a moisturizer and primer, boosting radiance and eradicating signs of fatigue.
#9 Concealer in V shape Under Eyes
To ensure you undereye concealer looks blended in and fresh, draw a V-shape under the eyes, making sure you don’t bring it right up to the skin directly under the lashes as this is more likely to crease and also make the eyes look smaller. Blend in the V-shape for a wide eyed look!
#10 Blend Down, Not Up
This is one that most of us don’t always follow, but for a perfected base you should really try. The majority of us have baby hairs on our face, especially around the jawline. Even if they are super fair and light, brushing against them makes them stand up! Brush downwards to avoid accentuating them.
#11 Dab Concealer on Spots, Don’t Blend Off
Using a high coverage concealer, place lightly and directly on the spot and a tiny bit just around the corners of it. Blend around it but don’t go near the head of the spot itself too much, just dab it gently. Otherwise the makeup will just swipe right off.
#12 What is Your Foundation Undertone?
Unfortunately, just because you’re light skinned doesn’t mean the shade named ‘light’ will match you, and it’s the same if you’re dark or olive. We do all have undertones in our skin, which determine what shade of makeup we should opt for. If you’re cool-toned with blue veins, opt for pink undertones in foundations. If warm with green veins, opt for yellow undertones while neutral should go for just that, neutral.
#13 Don’t Forget the Neck!
Even with your perfect match, our necks tend to be a slightly different shade than our faces, either slightly lighter or darker. Make them match perfectly by blending down the neck with the remains of the product left on your brush or sponge.
#14 Go Lightly on Brows
Having full, bushy brows is not only very on trend but suits every face, brings out our features and balances the face. Yet we don’t want to end up with stark, fake looking drawn on brows. Go gently with that pen! The darkest bit should be in the middle of the brow, and the photo below shows the shape you should follow.
#15 Always Double Cleanse to Remove and Start Again Fresh
Finally, we get to the bit where you actually have to take it all off! If you’re bad at putting on makeup, maybe you’re not so great at taking it off either. It’s so important to preserve the condition of your skin and prevent breakouts, wrinkles or dull skin by taking off every inch of makeup and cleansing the skin. Use a balm or oil to remove makeup and then go in with a second cleanser to ensure it is totally clean. Just released, check out the Pixi Double Cleanser (€33)!
