Hair is one of the main factors that changes up your look entirely. As you get older, there are a handful of tips you should keep in mind when deciding how to look after and style your locks. If you’re worried your hair is making you look older than you want, or that it’s frumpy in any way, then read our quick and easy tips to stay looking youthful and on trend no matter what age you are!
#1 Forego Formal
For nights out or professional events, you may usually veer towards formal hairstyles. This can make you look more middle-aged depending on the hairstyle you opt for. While Marion Cotillard always looks stunning, this low bun chignon does make her look more mature than she is, as it doesn’t flatter light brown monotone hair. It tends to look mousey when styled like this, so opt for a high bun instead.
#2 Shine is the Aim
Shine is harder to achieve as we get older, essentially because our scalp and hair tend to get drier as we age. Use products that encourage shine at least every time you wash it. Using an oil on damp hair will seal the cuticles and give a glossier finish. The Kérastase Elixir Ultime Hair Oil (€35) will strengthen and give shine.
#3 Long Locks Need Layers
Longer hair drags the face downwards, which is definitely not what we need as we get older. Lift the face by adding layers, just like Jennifer Aniston. Nobody wants to look like a witch or like the girl from The Ring, so face-framing layers are universally flattering.
#4 Natural Volume, Not Helmet Hair
Volume also lifts the face and gives the hair life and body. The wrong way to go about it is to overly tease it, make it stiff with hairspray and texture products or create high quiffs. This tends to look more fake, looking more ageing pageant winner than modern, so opt instead for more natural volume with a light mousse, volumizing shampoo and a hint of a texture spray, like the Redken Beach Envy Volume (€14.45).
#5 Textured Over Prim and Coiffed
Textured hair looks beachy and therefore young and relaxed, while perfectly coiffed hair with slightly curved ends is a bit Stepford Wives, so go for Charlize Theron texture instead. Imperfectly placed hair is fresher. The Ouai Texturizing Spray (€12) is one of the standouts from this new raved-about brand.
#6 Go for the Chop
Rather than going for mid length hair which is neither here nor there, be brave and try out a pixie cut. From Emma Thompson to Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Hudson, Anne Hathaway to Shailene Woodley and Robin Wright, every age looks rejuvenated with a cropped haircut. It gives off a daring, youthful attitude and will lift a weight off your shoulders quite literally.
#7 Protect to Stay Perfect
To maintain those silky locks, use silk pillowcases or a silk headscarf overnight so the shine won’t be gone when you wake. Otherwise, while you move in your sleep your hair will get scruffy and lose its shine.
#8 Soft and Wispy
Fringes are definitely really youthful, but when considering getting one, definitely go for a soft fringe rather than a severe, blunt one. Soft face framing pieces won’t make your face look to angular, which is often a worry as we age and lose fat in our face. If your fringe has a bit of bounce, it looks more delicate and easy to maintain also.
#9 Draining Dark Dyes
As we age we also lose a bit of the colour in our face. This is why we should never dye our hair a very dark colour, even if our natural hair colour was originally very dark. Opt for a few shades lighter, going ever so slightly lighter the more you age. Otherwise the face looks drained of colour altogether!
#10 Colourless Blonde
On the opposite end of the scale, dying your hair very light or white blonde can also be quite ageing… Just as very dark hair drains the face of colour, very light hair is equally draining. It looks wishy-washy like granny-white hair rather than ‘a blonde having more fun’. Adding in honey or deeper blonde tones will save it.
#11 Change Up Your Parting
A number of us may experience thinning hair as we get that bit older too. If you’re a creature of habit and tend to part & style you hair the exact same all the time, this could be adding to the problem. The same pieces of hair are constantly exposed to the elements and any styling tools you use. Start switching up the parting to protect the hair more and simultaneously add instant volume with a side flip.
#12 Biotin Supplements
If you feel your hair needs extra help in terms of thinning, hair strength and condition, taking a supplement will help from within. Biotin is also known as Vitamin B7, the vitamin which helps improve skin, hair and nail condition.
#13 Face Framing Pieces
If a fringe is not for you, ensure the layers you get include face framing pieces like Eva Mendes. Even if you have few layers throughout, a few pieces that hang around the jawline, or even the cheekbones, will draw attention to the fullest part of your face and therefore make you look younger.
#14 Don’t Go Too Long
For most of us, long hair past a certain age can add a few years. Some of us can pull it off once there are layers or a fringe, but for the majority we look better with a shorter style once we’ve reached our 30s. Although Jessica Alba looks glorious and glowing everyday of her life, her look is elevated with this bob.
