Being bold and experimenting with makeup is one of the biggest benefits of having it at our disposal. So while we’ll forever love the neutral everyday look, we revel in trends like this that show off MUA talent with dramatic flair, making it a performance! Here are 12 wicked ways to bite the lipstick bullet and nail the neon beauty trend. We dare you to wear it out this weekend!
#1 Do a Cut Crease in Neon
A cut crease is dramatic enough in itself, but if you want to really be extra, making it neon will really ensure a modern sultry eye. It’s easy enough to execute as well. With a neon liner like the NYX Professional Makeup Vivid Brights Eyeliner (€7.75), do a normal cat eye and mimic that shape in the crease too, connecting at either end.
#2 Line Those Lips Neon Style
The beauty of having neon lined lips is the lips are not only defined but giving a party glow. It also means that the rest of the lip is left bare, so there’s less hassle when it comes to reapplication. The Saffron Neon Lip Liners (€1.20) are an affordable choice.
#3 UV Contour
This is my personal favourite by far! The neon, UV haloscope colour is used as a highlighter and/or contour to give it an otherworldly feel without making it look too costume-like. If you can get your hands on it, the Milk Makeup Holographic Stick (€25) is insane. To merge the two opposite ends of the spectrum together and mix the ‘natural glow’ look with neon beauty, then this is the go-to baby!
#4 Jeffree Star Liquid Lipsticks
Drug Lord, Jawbreaker and Weirdo are just a few of the neon shades the controversial Jeffree Star Cosmetics icon sells in the Velour Liquid Lipstick (€19) collection. Mix and match for even more depth and punchiness!
#5 Ice Ice Baby
Speaking of Jeffree Star Cosmetics, the Skin Frost in Ice Cold (€30.30) is the perfect product nailing the eyes for this neon trend. The usual inner corner eye highlight just won’t cut it when it comes to doing super intense neon eyes!
#6 Neon is the New Camouflage
If you want 99% of your makeup to still be quite minimal but pay homage to the neon trend in some way, this undereye streak of colour is ideal. Strikes of neon orange (or your choice of colour) are a cool play on the camouflage paint worn by soldiers. Moon Glow Neon UV Eye Liner (€2.86) are a pretty good steal to create this and are available in a range of colours.
#7 Glow in the Dark Unicorn
Want a kickass cat eye? Create a unicorn’s winding horn winds around the flick of your black eyeliner, using a few different neon colours for maximum impact. The NYX Vivid Brights Eyeliner (€7.75) would be suitable for creating this look.
#8 Draw Lightning Flashes
Using the Lime Crime Milk Eyeliner in Blue (€15), draw lightning strikes across the lids. This will look incredible whenever you flutter those lashes or close your eyes. Keep the base very dark so it contrasts and makes the blue even more electric.
#9 Rainbow in the Dark
The Urban Decay Full Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette (€49) might be pricey to some but well worth it to paint your eyes in every colour of the rainbow! This doesn’t have to be precise, as the colours are supposed to run into each other. So don’t fuss, just have fun!
#10 Pop of Colour
This is another subtle way to try out the trend without diving in completely. Either use the NYX Vivid Brights Eyeliner (€7.75) or one of the brighter colours in the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil (€19.50) such as the colour ‘1999’, ‘Chaos’, ‘Freak’ or ‘Junkie’. Do a second cat eye, resting it right over the first black. Bam!
#11 White or Silver Liner to Bring it Together
Stark white or silver eyeliner will make the eyes pop as much as possible. If you really want to go all out, it’s the little details that make it count. Almost every brand will have a version of a white liner, while Too Faced Bulletproof Eyeliner (€23) also comes in silver.
#12 Colour Blocking
Two eyeshadows will do all the work for you. A yellow shade in the inner corner and one bright blue over the lids will make you the peacock of the party. Also, for the modern art-inspired look, don’t worry about blending, really go for the colour block effect! Whip out the Sleek MakeUP I-Divine Eye Palette in Acid (€10.49).
