Mega stars like Kim Kardashian and products like Kevin Aucoin’s Sculpting Powder gave rise to what had to be the biggest makeup trend of the last two years, contouring. What was once a trade secret between makeup artists used on sets and photoshoots has become part of people’s daily makeup routine. But now there’s a new look on the scene, and we have the 10 ways to wean yourself off contouring for the more natural look: nontouring.
#1 Match Made in Heaven
Consider the new trend nontouring as a more subtle merging of two of the largest trends from the recent past- contouring and strobing. Nontouring takes the two and tones them down to make them more wearable for the daytime and for the average person, who most likely isn’t walking onto a photoshoot today! Sometimes trends can go overboard in order to stand out and cause excitement, but don’t buy into the hype!
#2 Get into the Glow
Begin with a glow inducing, luminous primer that will keep your makeup from budging and fake an inner glow. This will lessen the amount of product you have to use to create a beautiful base and will bring out your natural beauty. Some great options for this are Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow (€49), Guerlain Meteorites Skin-Perfecting Base (€54.24), L’Oréal Paris Lumi Magique Primer (€14.99), Botanics All Bright Radiance Balm (€4.24) or the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector (€39.23).
#3 BB Your Best
Opt for a tinted moisturizer or BB cream rather than foundation. Foundation will blot out some of the features that make your skin look natural, like freckles and small imperfections. If you have problematic skin, you can always spot conceal over anything you need to cover once the base is done. Leading the pack of these light bases, in my opinion, are NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (€38), Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer (€48), Dior Diorskin Nude BB Creme (€46.50) and the Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector Daily All-In-One B.B. Blemish Balm Cream (€15.99).
#4 Colour Me Pretty
Add some colour and subtle shading/bronzing to your face with cream products. Cream or gel blush is ideal to achieve this look. Some stunning options are Becca Beach Tint in Guava (€23), H&M Cream Blush (€7.99) or the incredibly priced and gorgeously formulated Natural Collection Cream Blusher (€2.79)!
#5 Dare to Define
Ditching the contouring doesn’t mean you can’t define your features. Obviously that is the whole point of makeup! Go for a matte, non-shimmer bronzer that looks light enough on your skin but is still detectable. Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Contour (€23) may have the word contour in its name but don’t be confused, it is actually very light and more bronze shaded than a contour… it simply jumped on the contour bandwagon when it came to branding name choice! bareMinerals bareSkin Sheer Sun Serum Bronzer (€30) is another relatively new option which gives a beautiful subtle hint of colour and shading.
#6 Shine Bright like a Diamond
This is one of the most important steps – highlight! However, you can go very wrong here in the same way that you can with the contour… The past few years have seen an immeasurable amount of highlight products hitting the shelves, many going as full on as the heavy contours. Heavy handed shine and glitter chunks are as unnatural as Instagram contouring, so lay off and opt for one with less glaring impact. Highlights to look out for are Benefit Cosmetics Watt’s Up (€35), Clinique Chubby Stick in Sculpting Highlight (€23) and Revlon PhotoReady Skinlights Face Illuminator (€17.99).
#7 Eyes Au Natural
If you want to tie the whole look together and go for a natural eye as well, then go for either bronzed eyes, ethereal glowy eyes or lightly shaded eyes and little more. Use your bronzer in the crease of your eye to define it if you want to keep it super minimal and natural. For a touch more, go for a palette such as the Too Faced Natural Eye Shadow Collection (€38), bareMinerals ‘Ready’ Eyeshadow (€36), No 7 Stay Perfect Eye Mousse (€11) or Benefit Cosmetics Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow (€22.50).
#8 Bare Your Best Lips
It depends on the natural colour of your lips, but if you have darkly pigmented lips, stick to rosy or deep nude shades. If your lips are naturally pale pink or muted, pinky nudes and light nudes will match you more so. For darkly coloured lips, MAC Brick-O-La (€20) is a rich but natural berry tone. The Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector (€20) are a very easy way to get a tint of colour in a low maintenance way. Essence have a wide selection of creamy natural pinks and nudes for a very reasonable price which match the quality of many high end brands!
#9 Mist is a Must
Finish the face with a spritz of a moisturizing setting spray. This will also revive makeup throughout the day too if you want a long-lasting look or feel tired or warm. A mineral water spray is a good basic if you have very sensitive skin and don’t want to add too much to your skin but want a little something. MAC Prep & Prime Fix + (€22) is a godsend for something more enriched with minerals and a light, fresh scent.
#10 Star Power
For inspiration look at stars like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, model sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid, Jennifer Lopez, Kendall Jenner and Blake Lively. Glowy, bronzed eyes are paired with this look more often than not, with an inner eye duct highlight.
